The Old Man

This is an unfinished project. There is only atmospheric audio in some of it.

The story follows an old man who lives alone after his wife passed away. The only happiness he has is when his grandkids come and visit him. Other than that, his life is filled with problems that only drag him down. Originally, I was going to have some voices for the grandkids visiting and the other characters like the policeman, and his son that informs him that they are moving him to a care home, however, due to time constraints, I was rendering the project up to the final date of submission leaving no time for post-production.

The original idea was going to explore the growing privatisation of necessities such as water. The original story would have followed a farmer in the south of America defending the privatisation of water, told to him by the TV. The lack of water, price of it and cleanliness of it would lead to health problems and the death of his wife. This would force him re-evaluate his views and mistakes he made because of them.

While this idea was something I wanted to explore, I was not that passionate about the story. I finished modelling the main character at the halfway point in the project (due to my lack of knowledge) leaving me with one scene and a character to tell the story.

My grandmother had dementia and had to be moved into a nursing home to receive the care she needed, leaving my grandfather alone in his home. I remember visiting my grandmother in a nursing home that I never enjoyed due to the dark and grim atmosphere it had along with sitting in a room with someone who doesn't know you along with very little to do. Looking back on that, I hate how I felt whenever I would visit, due to not fully comprehending everything that was going on. My grandfather lived in the his house alone, full of reminders of his life lived, and while I doubt he was truly lonely and bored all the time, I remember the smiles he would give when we would visit along with his other relatives. I ended up thinking about them when I was looking for a story to tell. Exploring the loneliness that could come with age, the problems that come with it, and the importance of family to them.

This is my first fully put together project with a full script and vision for what I wanted to make. I modelled, textured and rigged the main character and animated a human character properly for the first time. I modelled the house (not all the furniture) and the environment surrounding it as well.

I'm not, overall, happy with the project, while there is a lot in it that I have done for the first time, including modelling a character from scratch and fulling animating it, due to the time constraints I had, I ended up having to give up on making it the best I could so that I could submit a completed story even if it means leaving shots unfinished and animations unpolished. Learning to model and rig the character took a lot of my time leaving me unable to model any other characters so I used the camera to obscure people while giving the impression they were there (though had there been voices it would have been more obvious).

I do think, for my first project of this type, that it demonstrates the skills I have learnt and my ambition to further develop them.

This was fully produced by me, other than some furniture, plant pots, and objects (Purchased on Poliigon).
